Local Coaching Institutes : Should you opt for them?

Really serious about cracking JEE and getting into the most prestigious institutes of our country i.e IIT's. Are coaching institutes at your city really capable of making you an IITian?

NOTE: This article is a summary of experiences of my friends who took coaching in classes XI and XII at their respective cities. They were from FITJEE, Vidyamandir Classes, Aakash, etc.

Easy method of knowing the best coaching in your city...
You need to be very cautious in choosing the right coaching available in your city. Believe Me ! It's really easy to find out which coaching is best for you. You just need to get feedback of various coaching institutes from your seniors. Some of the coaching classes like Vidyamandir Classes (VMC) in Delhi are excellent. However, a particular center of VMC in your city may or may not be good. Take account of other factors like time it will take for you to reach coaching from your home.

How do coaching institutes in your city compare to those found in Kota?
There is almost no difference in the fees you pay to these institutes and the material they provide. However, there are two major factors make up for all the difference.
First one is of course the teachers (Some teachers at Kota get crores as salary), each and every friend of mine agreed that teachers at their local coaching institutes never taught them the subject with such great level of detail. The issue remains here too! Teachers are good but they never touch the level JEE Advanced requires. I'll tell you the reason for this after second point.
Second factor here is your peer group, it will be consisting of your best friends which are willing to take yours and theirs friendship to a next level. There's no harm in it, but it all comes at the cost of your studies. Almost 90% students present here will not at all be serious about their future unlike you (I made that prediction from the fact that you're reading this article ☺).

Now, the reality...
Coaching institutes want maximum number of students to get selected in JEE (mains at least if not in Advanced) so that they can advertise these results next year.
Since, a very few of your batch-mates are working hard for JEE, it becomes really hard for a teacher to get those fun-seeking students get selected in JEE maintaining that 'high-level' which Advanced requires. So, as a result they degrade the quality of teaching so that maximum number of students get selected in JEE Mains (which can be easily cleared by mugging up things).

ADVANTAGES OF KOTA

The list is long, I've included all the advantages in a 1000+ words article Should you go to Kota for JEE Prepration?

ADVANTAGES OF YOUR CITY
  • You have support of your family, the first and foremost thing you'll miss in Kota. This will save a lot of your time, your family will take care of all the things.
  • Better and Cool Environment (at least for most parts of our country). Did I mentioned air quality in Kota is very poor and you'll feel like everyday is a Diwali Day !
  • Supportive teachers: Since, the number of students interested in studying are less, some of the teachers are ready to devote a lot of time clearing your concepts.

IITians Way Solution to a major problem in local coaching institutes
It is very likely you'll come to know that some teachers are good, but some are not that great. In that case, you may leave the classes of bad teachers, and replace them with either individual coaching or Etoos Video lectures. Individual coaching is one in which a teacher not having any connection with coaching institutes teaches a particular subject for IIT-JEE. For example - Physics teacher at your coaching institute is not that great. You may look out for an individual teacher XYZ, who teaches physics to IIT-JEE students. If you are unable to find an individual teacher, you may watch Etoos Video Lectures (Click here to know more).
